Post Meeting Update
The October meeting of the Friends was a rousing success, with more than 50 guests thoroughly enjoying a presentation by Dr. Michael Green from UNLV.
The meeting was held on the afternoon of October 17 in the Activities Center at the Museum. The Friends would like to thank everyone who attended and happily invite you to our next meeting on November 21. Our speaker will be Dr. Su Kim Chung from UNLV.
The Friends business meeting covered the following items:
- The museum again reviewed the gala opening of the Old Spanish Trail exhibition on November 15. All Friends members are invited to the opening which starts at 6 pm.
- We are acting as the broker on a $14,000 grant provided by the Centennial Commission. To date, approximately $8,500 has been spent. We have provided documents for reimbursement.
- The Friends currently have $45,328 in our bank accounts. Of this, $11,700 has been committed to various museum programs.
- Since the September meeting, additional donations have been provided for our summer campaign. The members had voted to transfer $3,400 from the general fund to the campaign. With these additional donations, that amount has been decreased to $2,695.
- The fall auction will run Details for accessing the online site will be provided on November 1. The site will be open for viewing only from November 1-8, and then on November 8, live bidding will occur.
- Our next book fair is scheduled for December 7 at the Barnes & Noble on Rainbow. The fair will be open to all from 9am until 8 pm. Approximately 15% of all sales from the store and the cafe will be donated to the Friends. Save your book and Christmas purchases for December 7! Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for the day.
- The by-laws were amended to allow directors to run for more than 2 consecutive terms if approved by a membership vote. Persons seeking a position will be reviewed at the November and December meetings.
- The November speaker will be Dr. Su Kim Chung, Manuscripts Librarian/Archivist in Special Collections at UNLV. Dr. Chung’s subject will be “Jeanne Wier and her early collections from Nevada in 1906/1907.

Our speaker for the afternoon will be Dr. Michael Green, a history professor from UNLV. Dr. Green, who received his BA and MA from UNLV and His PHD from Colombia, teaches courses that range throughout U.S. history, but focus particularly on Las Vegas and Nevada history, the Civil War era and Abraham Lincoln, and the U. S. Supreme Court. Michael is also a noted author of multiple books, the most recent being “Lincoln and Native Americans.”
Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation of Nevada’s statehood, but he and the Civil War had a lot more to do with how Nevada developed than that one moment …and there are plenty of myths and facts to go with why Nevada became a state. Professor Green will discuss these developments in his talk.
