August Meeting

The Friends August meeting was held on Thursday, August 19, starting at our new time of 2:30 PM . The doors opened at 2:00 PM so everyone could enjoy a socializing period before the meeting.

Our guest speaker was Professor DeAnna Beachley, from the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), Professor Beachley is a graduate of Youngstown State University (BA, MA) and Northern Arizona University (Ph.D). She is a professor of History and Women’s Studies at CSN, and is a Scholar of the American women’s suffrage movement, the American women’s movement, and social history. Professor Beachley is currently working on a biography of the Nevada suffrage leader, Anne Henrietta Martin (pictured below). Her topic for our session was the women’s suffrage movement, including Anne Martin’s role, and the role of women of color in Nevada’s movement. Dr. Beachley provided an interesting discussion on the personalities that drove the suffrage movement and the challenges they faced to make it a success. We thank Dr. Beachley for spending her afternoon with us.

Other key items from the meeting agenda were:

  1. Current cash on hand is $17,760.
  2. The Friends will work with Jeff Alpert to publicize and sell his new book when published at the end of the year.
  3. The “Dino Day” scheduled for November has been postponed due to COVID considerations.
  4. The Friends new lobby display is in place.
  5. The board rejected the idea of selling t-shirts as we will become competition for the museum store – we should support museum sales.
  6. The website redesign will be introduced in September
  7. The Board agreed to design and sell a coloring book on the museum activities.
  8. The Board appointed (as per the by-laws) Ms. Maya Strelar-Migotti to the open board position of Media Coordinator.

Our next meeting will be on September 16, with doors opening at 2 PM.
