John L. Smith and Sally Denton, a duo of authors, grace Friends’ 2019 Barnes & Noble bookfair

by Joan Whitely

The Friends’ Barnes & Noble bookfair on Dec. 14 was a great day for Nevada history. The event’s two guest speakers, authors John L. Smith and Sally Denton, have written between them more than 20 books, mostly about Nevada history. Another special “guest” was the Friends’ dinosaur mascot, a Pteranodon - as played by Western High teen volunteers in costume.

Our Bookfair greeters and gift-wrappers, spanning the range of time

The Friends raised approximately $1,100 from the bookfair, more than our 2018 bookfair at the same Barnes & Noble store, which raised about $800. On both occasions, Western students who belong to Jobs for Nevada’s Graduates (JNG) did complimentary giftwrap and took turns roaming the store aisles as a friendly Pteranodon handing out holiday candies and bookfair vouchers.

The Friends will try to hold two such bookfairs in 2020: a springtime bookfair at the Barnes & Noble in Henderson as well as another December fair at the same Summerlin store.

The Friends thank all the JNG volunteers who helped out, as well as Cam Camburn, Donna Harper, Jim Parish, Mary Savage and Joan Whitely.

The Friend's Holiday Rontunda Sale Was a Success

On Dec. 7, the Friends held a holiday sale in the museum's rotunda offering a range of gift items such as custom note cards, costume jewelry, Nevada-shaped brooches and Italian Christmas ornaments. We thank Carol Swearingen, Mary Savage and Joan Whitely for helping out at the sale, which raised more than $400. The Italian ornaments were donated by museum volunteer David Porcello, with proceeds from their sale to benefit the museum's department of costume and textiles.

The donated ornaments featured figures of well-clad women, with the exception of one Elvis, also well-clad
